Miccarelli Returning To Iraq
By Bradley Vasoli, The Bulletin
State Rep.-elect Nick Miccarelli, R-162nd, of Delaware County, announced yesterday he will return to active duty in Iraq for the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in which he is a sergeant.
Sgt. Miccarelli will head to Fort Sill, Ok. in February and will deploy to Iraq as a Chinook Machine Gunner with the 28th Combat Aviation Brigade for a period not to exceed one year. The Ridley Park resident has already served in Iraq and the Balkans.
“It’s something that I’ve always been ready for, not something that I’m going to shirk,” he said. “I’m going to fulfill my duties.”
He said he is confident his staff will be able to perform optimum county services while he is away, although he looks forward to begin work on policy once he returns.
“The constituent service end of it is going to be unchanged,” he said. “There’s a lot I want to do. As far as my time being away, the Delco delegation will obviously be sticking up for the 162nd in my absence.”
State Sen. John Pippy, R-37th, of Allegheny and Washington counties, was similarly called to active duty as a major in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 2003.
“We should all be proud of what Nick and every soldier are doing for our country,” Major Pippy told reporters. “His situation is not unique. He is carrying on a proud tradition of Pennsylvanians serving as citizen-soldiers.”
State Rep. Scott Perry, R-92nd, of York and Cumberland Counties, will be deploying with Sgt. Miccarelli as a Lt. Colonel.
