Brownback Sparks Outrage, Kansas Senator Irks Pro-Lifers
Kansas Senator’s Support For Pro-Abortion Sebelius Irks Pro-Lifers
By John P. Connolly, The Bulletin
U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., prompted the disappointment and outrage of pro-lifers across the country over his continued support of pro-abortion Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, D-Kan., to head the Department of Health and Human Services.
Mr. Brownback issued a joint statement with fellow Kansas Republican Sen. Pat Roberts this week, congratulating Ms. Sebelius on the appointment.
“It’s an honor for the State of Kansas to have an elected official appointed to the president’s cabinet,” wrote the senators. “We are hopeful Gov. Sebelius will be a voice for Kansas and rural America at the department. We look forward to working with her on issues important to the state including a National Cancer Institute Designation at the University of Kansas Cancer Center.”
President Barack Obama nominated Ms. Sebelius, who is well known for her pro-abortion record and support of late-term abortionist George Tiller, for the post on Monday. Mr. Brownback, who ran for president on a pro-life platform in 2008, has disappointed pro-life leaders across the country for the move.
“Brownback’s support for Sebelius doesn’t undercut pro-lifers one bit,” American Life League (ALL) spokeswoman Katie Walker told Politico. “It certainly undercuts Brownback’s credibility, not to mention the victims of abortion.”
“I think we’ve just lost pro-life leadership in the U.S. Senate, and it’s a tragedy,” said ALL president Judie Brown to LifeSiteNews. “I’ll never use ‘pro-life’ to describe him again. People have just lost their moral compass — which means Obama’s winning.”
“This was not a mistake to be swept under the rug, as some pro-lifers wish,” wrote pro-life blogger Jill Stanek. “A pro-life politician trying to advance in power, as Brownback wants to do, cannot be excused for disavowing pro-life principles along the way. Every action has ramifications, one way or the other. This one was bad.”
Brian J. Gail, author of the Catholic novel, Fatherless, published by One More Soul press, expressed his surprise that somebody like Mr. Brownback would endorse somebody with Ms. Sebelius’ credentials.
“I think it’s outrageous,” said Mr. Gail. “I was shocked when I heard that he would support a woman who was so outrageously pro-abortion, who even hosted George Tiller at the governor’s mansion. She provides camouflage for her position by occasionally tacking to the right on certain issues; but it’s unacceptable for any Catholic to support or endorse any appointee with that kind of record. It shocks me that Sen. Brownback would be among them.”
“I’m more than disappointed; I’m scandalized,” said Edel Finnegan, executive director of the Pro-Life Union of Southeastern Pennsylvania. “I’m scandalized that someone who claims to be pro-life and Catholic could support an HHS director who is pro-abortion. Pro-lifers should always be prudent in their actions, but prudence doesn’t mean compromise with someone whose biggest supporter was George Tiller.”
Mr. Brownback has decided not to seek another term in the senate due to self-imposed term limits. He has indicated his desire to run for governor of Kansas in the 2010 election.
