Republicans Offer Budget Blueprint

Two days after Barack Obama called on Republicans to offer a budget of their own, House Minority Leader John Boehner unveiled a GOP “budget blueprint” to the nation Thursday. The blueprint — although light on specifics — is intended to be a precursor to next week’s introduction of the full budget alternative.

“Two nights ago the president said, ‘We haven’t seen a budget yet out of Republicans.’ Well, it’s just not true because — Here it is, Mr. President,” Mr. Boehner said during a press conference.

Shell-shocked from two months of record spending by Democrats, House Republicans opted to go on the offensive to offer solutions to the nation’s economic troubles that focuses on cutting taxes, reducing the size of government and cutting federal spending.

The budget blueprint also pledges to end bailouts, reduce gasoline prices through an “all- of-the-above” energy approach and keep inflation in check.

“This isn’t the first time Republicans offered better solutions, and the president and Democrats in Congress know that.  This year, House Republicans have offered alternatives on the economy and jobs, children’s health care, college and retirement savings and housing,” Mr. Boehner said.

“Now, our ‘Road to Recovery’ plan builds on the better budget principles I outlined for the president last week.  It’s time for Washington Democrats to start doing what’s in the best interests of the American people and work with us to produce a fiscally responsible budget that creates jobs and helps middle-class families.”

Just a blueprint of the proposed GOP budget, Republicans told reporters specifics would come next week when the plan was introduced in the House. Democrats quickly attacked the budget for being hollow.

“I’m all for changing the way we do business in Washington, but proposing a ‘budget’ that doesn’t use numbers may be too much for me,” said DNC National Press Secretary Hari Sevugan.

“After 27 days, the best House Republicans could come up with is a 19-page pamphlet that does not include a single real budget proposal or estimate.  There are more numbers in my last sentence than there are in the entire House GOP ‘budget.’  While there had been talk that House Republicans were overriding their Senate counterparts to offer a budget alternative, it’s clear after this announcement that neither of them have anything to offer but criticism.”

In the past few weeks, Republican leadership has struggled to formulate a consistent game plan on dealing with Mr. Obama’s controversial budget. Senate Republicans have opted not to introduce a budget alternative of their own and will attempt to attach amendments to Mr. Obama’s budget to reduce its size and scope.

Republicans charge Democrats criticism of the budget are meant to distract voters and stressed the president’s budget will do more to harm the nation.

“The president’s budget will hurt the economy and destroy jobs,” Mr. Boehner said. “By contrast, our ‘Road to Recovery’ plan will strengthen the economy, create jobs and restore fiscal sanity in Washington.”

The Obama budget, as proposed, would cost $3.6 trillion and raise the deficit by $1.36 trillion next year.
