Holzer Is Player Of The Year

Stephanie Holzer was named the Class AAAA player of the year by The Associated Press yesterday following a season in which the senior led Cardinal O’Hara to the PIAA state championship game.
Holzer, a Vanderbilt recruit, averaged 17.7 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.2 blocks and 2.9 assists for the Lions, who lost to Mount Lebanon in the state title game earlier this month. The 6-foot-4 center broke her right ankle in the second half of that game with her team leading — the latest in a long line of foot/leg injuries suffered by the All-American.
Holzer edged Schenley senior Markel Walker for player of the year, but Walker joined her on the all-state first team. Also on the squad are Shante Evans of West Chester Henderson, who is committed to Hofstra, as well as Olivia Bresnahan of Butler, Emily Correal of Peters Township and Alyssa Thomas of Central Dauphin.
The AAAA second team features four local players — all seniors — in Upper Darby’s Diamon Beckford, Downingtown East’s Kristen Blye, Lower Merion’s Molly Hanlon and Conwell-Egan’s Carmen Tyson-Thomas.
The third team includes Natasha Cloud of Cardinal O’Hara, Shayla Felder of Cheltenham, Janaa Pickard of Central and Shakia Robinson of North Penn.
The Class AAA postseason honors were dominated by Archbishop Carroll, which went 30-1 en route to winning the first PIAA state championship for any Catholic League school. The Patriots had the player of the year in senior Kerri Shields and the coach of the year in Chuck Creighton. In addition, Carroll junior Erin Shields was selected for the AAA second team.
Joining Kerri Shields on the first team was, among others, Archbishop Wood senior Ashley Robinson. Mount St. Joseph senior Elle Hagedorn was a second-team choice, while Neumann-Goretti’s Ashley White was a third-team selection.
The Class AA team was headlined by Germantown Academy junior Maggie Lucas, who was the runner-up for AA player of the year to Kayla McBride of Erie’s Villa Maria. A pair of Lucas’ teammates, senior Jesse Carey (second team) and junior Tory Thierolf (third team) were also honored. Notre Dame’s Devon Kane was a first-team pick after scoring 15.9 ppg for the Irish.
