Faulty Wiring Cause Of Three Fire Deaths
By JENNY DeHUFF, The Bulletin
The Philadelphia Fire Department released the cause of a March 30 house fire yesterday, which killed three victims.
Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said an electrical wire malfunction caused the blaze. The fire killed three women in the city’s Brewerytown section — identified as Jacqueline Cooper, 48, her daughter, Teya Cooper, 32 and a granddaughter, Kaira, 8.
Emergency services responded to the 1400 block of North Newkirk Street just before 1 a.m. on March 30, where the females had occupied a two-story dwelling. Early on, investigators tried determining the cause of the fire, which was said to have started on the first floor.
They died from severe burns and injuries sustained in a fall from a second-floor window.
Investigators did not find any working smoke alarms on the premises.
Mr. Ayers said the fire served as a reminder for Philadelphians to be mindful of the following electrical safety tips:
• Ensure there are enough electrical outlets in each room to avoid the need for multiple attachment plugs and long extension cords.
• Ensure each home has special circuits for heavy-duty appliances like air conditions.
• Check extension and appliance cords for wear and tear.
• Avoid draping extension cords and wire over piping or nails.
