Sayen Estate Offers Grant To Library Organization
By JENNY DeHUFF, The Bulletin
The estate of the late Ann Sayen, a philanthropist and member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, has donated $25,000 to the Friends of the Free Library (FFL).
The “Books for Children” book drive marks the start of National Library Week, with the goal of collecting 10,000 books for summer reading. FFL envisions the gift as an opportunity to help teenagers finish high school.
The city has a 21-percent illiteracy rate and nearly 50-percent high school dropout rate, and FFL Executive Director Amy Dougherty said she hopes those numbers will decrease with help from the donation.
“I urge you to visit your local library branch and sit next to the librarian for 15 or 20 minutes,” said Ms. Dougherty in a news release. “If you do, you will witness firsthand our committed library staff, people on the front line of the educational and information highway at our public library.”
Studies show that students with a home environment rich with books are less likely to fall behind before they enter middle school.
