Phillies Announce Kalas Tributes
By Drew Silverman, The Bulletin
The Phillies are planning an assortment of tributes to Harry Kalas this weekend, when they play the Padres at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Friday
• The television booth will be renamed the Harry Kalas Broadcast Booth, “That ball’s outta here!” The neighboring radio booth is already named the Richie (“Whitey”) Ashburn Broadcast Booth, “This game’s easy, Harry.”
• The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown out by Harry’s three sons — Todd, Brad and Kane. Kane, who is studying opera in college, will sing the national anthem, following a moment of silence.
• All fans will receive an 8x10 color photograph of Harry the K.
• A video commemorating Kalas will be aired on PhanaVision prior to the game.
• The first half-inning of the game, which will air on the Comcast Network (formerly CN8), will have no announcer commentary.
• Instead of “Take me out to the ballgame,” the seventh-inning stretch will feature a video of Kalas singing “High Hopes,” with all fans invited to join in.
Saturday
• Fans can pay respects to Kalas at Citizens Bank Park on a first come, first served basis from 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. At 1 p.m., broadcasters, front office employees, friends and family members will pay their respects. At 1:30 p.m., the team will conduct an on-field tribute to Kalas, whose casket will be located behind home plate.
• All fans in attendance will receive a commemorative program, an 8x10 photograph of Kalas and a poem he wrote to the Philadelphia fans in 2002.
Seven-Game Homestand
• Kalas’ signature will be displayed on the field,
• A black drape will be hung in front of the Phillies’ broadcast booths.
• The Phillies flag in Ashburn Alley will be hung at half-mast.
Season
• A billboard honoring Kalas will be displayed on the outfield wall.
• All players and coaches will wear an “HK” patch on their uniforms, right near the heart.
• Following every Phillies home run, Kalas’ “Outta here!” call will be played over the PA system as the Liberty Bell in center field lights up.
