Poll Finds Congress' Approval Ratings Are Equal To Cheney
Democrats Said Cheney's Ratings Discredit Him
By MICHAEL P. TREMOGLIE, The Bulletin
Critics of former Vice President Dick Cheney have attempted to discredit his recent remarks about the Obama administration. One item they like to cite is Mr. Cheney’s terrible approval rating.
But a recent Rasmussen poll reveals that while Republicans and Democrats disagree over most issues, the one thing they agree on is that they have a low opinion of the U.S. Congress. Their approval rating is equal to that of Mr. Cheney’s when he left office.
When all voters were asked which branch of the federal government they trust the most, 34 percent say the Supreme Court, while 27 percent choose the president. Only 13 percent say Congress is the branch of government they trust most. This was the same percentage that Mr. Cheney received. Democrats like to say Mr. Cheney’s low approval ratings discredits his criticism of the Obama administration.
Divided politically, 12 percent of Democrats and 10 percent of those unaffiliated with a party say Congress is the branch of government they trust most. Republicans are slightly more trusting. 15 percent of them trust Congress the most. This is surprising because Democrats control both the Senate and the House.
A plurality of Democrats (47 percent) trust the president most. For 41 percent of Republicans and 40 percent of independent voters, the Supreme Court tops the list.
The Rasmussen Report press release said that by a 2-to-1 margin, Americans believe that Congress will always make things worse. Fifty-five percent believe most congressmen cheat on their income taxes. Two-thirds think their own economic judgment is better than Congress.
