Orchestra Announces Neighborhood Concerts
By JONATHAN L. FISCHER, The Bulletin
The Philadelphia Orchestra’s free summer concert series will include performances at Philadelphia University and Deliverance Evangelistic Church, the organization announced yesterday.
The June 27 concert at Philadelphia University marks both the beginning of the institution’s 125th year as well as the first time the orchestra has performed there. Associate Conductor Rossen Milanov will lead the orchestra in a program featuring works by some of the most recognizable names in the classical canon: Brahms, Mendelssohn, Verdi and Wagner. The concert begins at 7 p.m.
“Philadelphia University’s history, like that of the Orchestra, is intertwined with the life of this great city, and we look forward to continuing our role as higher education leaders in Philadelphia and throughout the world for many years to come,” said Philadelphia University President Stephen Spinelli Jr. in a press release yesterday.
For the 7 p.m. performance at Deliverance Evangelistic Church (2001 Lehigh Ave.) on July 31, mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson will join the orchestra, to be led by Assistant Conductor Danail Rachev. The program has not been announced yet, but the release said it will include “popular classics.”
Doors to both shows open at 6:15 p.m., and admission is first-come, first-served. The current series of free neighborhood concerts began in 2000.
The orchestra also will perform nine times at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Fairmount Park throughout the summer, beginning with an all-Beethoven program (including the ubiquitous Symphony No. 5) on June 29 at 8 p.m. On June 30 at 8 p.m., the orchestra will perform works by Lutoslawski, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Saint-Saëns. And on July 1 at 8 p.m., Stravinsky’s famous Firebird suite will cap off a program of Mozart, Vivaldi and Theofanidas. Students from the Curtis Institute of Music will join the orchestra all three nights.
The full Mann Center schedule can be found at www.manncenter.org.
The 2009-2010 orchestra season — the second with Conductor Charles Dutoit at the helm — begins Sept. 25 in the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall with a program of Saint-Saëns and Berlioz.
