In Memory Of Rev. Clifford
Letter to the Editor
To The Editor:
Rev. Donald Clifford SJ died recently. His funeral was attended by a rather large gathering of people. They were a bit ‘different.’ What made it so? Don did.
The biggest difference was the very large number of Jewish people in attendance at this Mass for a Catholic priest. They were intermingled with just ordinary folk and scholars and athletes of all genders and denominations among whom Don SJ had ministered for many years out of St. Joseph’s University.
There were many tears but not much notoriety made of Don’s sudden passing. Don’s ministries were varied. At one time or other, he taught Theology, was Chaplain for the Assumption Sisters, Editor for The National Jesuit News, Moderator for the University’s Women Basketball Team and, all the while, very much involved in Catholic-Jewish relations. His death is truly a loss for many aspects of our entire community,
His life was very much in keeping with the motto of the Jesuit founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola, “Ad maiorem Dei gloriam” — to the greater glory of God. To which he, as others before him, might add ‘inque hominum salutem’ — and the salvation of humanity.
