Planned Parenthood Spearheads Effort to Influence Obama Health Care
Attempts to Move Abortion to the Forefront
By Joe Murray, The Bulletin
The nation’s largest provider of abortions laid siege to Capitol Hill Thursday lobbying lawmakers to include “women’s health” issues in the massive Obama health care plan. The health care push came on the same day Planned Parenthood, along with other foster care/adoption organizations, launched a new effort Thursday to reduce teen pregnancy among foster care youth.
“As a leading women’s health care provider and advocate, Planned Parenthood knows firsthand the importance of making sure women are a priority in health care reform,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards.
“That’s why we are taking our case to lawmakers. It’s time for Washington to learn what millions of American women have known for a long time. Women’s health care is basic health care. More than 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood health centers do is provide preventive health care. Planned Parenthood health centers are essential community health care providers.”
On Thursday, a gaggle of Planned Parenthood staff, board members and volunteers visited 250 lawmakers on the Hill. Their purpose, as stated by a Planned Parenthood release, was to ensure “any health care reform effort must include access to comprehensive reproductive health care.”
“Women must not be worse off after health care reform than they are now,” said Mrs. Richards. “That means we need commonsense proposals that give women access to reproductive health care and the opportunity to go to their provider of choice.”
Conservatives charged Planned Parenthood’s efforts are masking the group’s true intentions “ to increase the availability of taxpayer funded abortions.
"The most critical item on the pro-life agenda is stopping the Obama/Pelosi health care plan which includes taxpayer funded abortions,” said Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition. The CDC is launching an effort, dubbed “Abortion is Not Health Care,” to counter the pro-choice efforts to institutionalize abortion in health care.
“If abortion becomes part of a health care entitlement, it will add at least 25 years to our struggle toward ending the violence of abortion in America.”
Among the major concerns of the pro-life movement is by fusing abortion with Obama’s nationalized health care system taxpayers will be forced to foot the bill for abortion services.
“If President Obama and Speaker Pelosi have their way, Pro-life Catholics and Evangelicals would be forced to pay for abortions. People of good will who believe that human rights begin in the womb would have to pay for the brutal crushing of that innocent life,” Rev. Mahoney said.
But as the abortion controversy loomed large over health care, Planned Parenthood also jump started an effort to “reduce” pregnancies in foster care.
The abortion provider teamed with the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI), The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, and the National Foster Care Coalition to form a round table with the purpose of advising Congress and the Obama administration on how to reduce pregnancies among the youth in foster care.
