Ten Business Books To Read This Month

The stock market has been rebounding for most of the summer, which portends an economy that will slowly start to gather steam.  This is also the biggest month of the year for people taking their vacation as they look to recharge their batteries to prepare for the final push to close sales and prepare for the New Year.  It’s a great time to reflect and read.  Here are three books to consider:

1. “Inside the Mind of the Shopper,” by Dr. Herb Sorensen — If you own a retail store or sell through retailers this book will provide you with research and expert interviews on how shoppers think and how they make buying decisions.

2. “Ignore Everybody and 39 Other Keys to Creativity,” by Hugh MacLeod   — The key to success, according to the author, is how to differentiate yourself by being creative in how you develop and offer your product or service.

3. “Re-Think,” by Ric Merrifield  — The author provides a process and methodology along with examples of how to improve the way companies operate and develop new products and services.

4. “Management Rewired: Why Feedback Doesn’t Work and Other Surprising Lessons from the Latest Brain Science,” by Charles Jacobs  — If you watch enough doctor shows such as “House” you know that there a variety of machines that track brain waves.  This book provides insight into research on how people react to various stimuli such as increasing pay, positive and negative feedback.  One thing we learn is that people by and large aren’t motivated by money, but enjoyment of work.

5. “The Cost of Bad Behavior,” by Christine Pearson and Christine Porath —  My daughter once worked for a well known chain where the boss was rude and many of the employees lacked common courtesy.  She hated every day she worked there and left for another job with another national chain where the boss was caring and the people polite.  The people loved working at her second restaurant and few people ever left.  Successful organizations encourage civility between employees and employees with the public.

6. “Helping People Win at Work,” by Ken Blanchard and Garry Ridge — The book talks about how to set attainable goals that improves performance and make employees feel successful.

7. “So What?  How to Communicate What Really Matters to Your Audience” by Mark Magnacca — A great book for how to communicate what ever you are trying to sell whether it is an idea, product or service to a small or large group.

8. “The Network Challenge: Strategy, Profit, and Risk in an Interlinked World,” by Paul Kleindorfer and Jerry Wind. — This book from Wharton Publishing features essays from some of the world’s foremost academicians that study every facet of business on a global basis.  A great book to read for insights on how to succeed internationally.

9. “The Momentum Effect: How to Ignite Exceptional Growth,” by J.C. Larreche — Another book from Wharton Publishing written by a professor from France’s leading business school.  Great case studies of successful companies that captured market and drove sales by offering a unique value proposition and riding the momentum wave.

10.    “The Other Kind of Smart: Simple Ways to Boost Your Emotional Intelligence for Greater Personal Effectiveness and Success,” by Harvey Deutschendorf — The book shows you have to use your emotions in a positive constructive way to handle problems, improve performance and interpersonal relationships.

While you are relaxing give your mind a one-hour mental work out.

Reading can only enhance your chances of success.
