It’s Never Too Early To Start Praying

By JIM VANORE, For The Bulletin

I made three wishes this past weekend. Then I silently asked God to give me the strength and grace to accept whatever came my way regarding the outcome of my three aspirations.

They were simple enough – in reverse order of priority: I wanted the Eagles to thrash the Giants; I wanted the Phillies to win the World Series (again), and I wanted Chris Christie to win the gubernatorial election.

Two out of three – so I got that goin’ for me as I awoke Thursday after game six of the Series.

It hadn’t occurred to me before, but I now realize that I had been pulling for the underdog in each contest.

The Yankees – the best team money could buy – are once again the lords (more like the CEOs) of baseball. But the high-priced Giants were steamrolled by the less high-priced Eagles, and common man Mr. Christie became New Jersey’s Governor-elect over multi-millionaire Jon Corzine.

The incumbent governor had thrown bundles of his own money into a campaign to convince the electorate that New Jersey was nowhere near as bad as its citizens apparently believed.

Geez…they really did hold him accountable.

So, George Steinbrenner bought himself another World Series, and George Soros may have been able to buy the White House for an unknown, inexperienced youngster from (Illinois? Hawaii?), but Mr. Corzine failed in his (literal) bid for another term in Trenton.

The people of New Jersey were a harder sell the second time around. Consumers tend to become more selective with experience.

In a way, that’s "two out of three" for their side. My side? Well, I’ll have to be content with Christie and the Eagles for now, but as fans are want to advise, “Wait ‘till next year.”

Next year, the mid-term congressional elections and the World Series coincide. I don’t know who the Eagles will be playing that week, but I’ve already started praying for three out of three.
