The Independence Seaport Museum saluted U.S. veterans on Veterans Day, November 11, 2009, with a morning ceremony aboard the National Historic Landmark Cruiser Olympia. Due to rain, the event was moved from the ship's fantail to an interior deck.
The ceremony featured the ringing of the ship's bells, a flag-folding rite, remarks by dignitaries, and a bugler playing the National Anthem and Taps. The guests then moved outside to an upper deck for a gun salute and display by the Philadelphia Fire Department's Fireboat Independence in the Delaware River.
Olympia, stewarded by Independence Seaport Museum, was Admiral Dewey’s flagship in the Spanish-American War victory that launched America’s rise to a world power. Today, she is the only surviving vessel from that War, the world’s oldest floating steel warship, and a one-of-a-kind naval gem, as no sister ships were built; the perfect venue for a veterans’ tribute.
